SWAINSBORO, Ga. — An extra night at Swainsboro Raceway was extra nice for Brandon Overton.
With his third straight Schaeffer’s Southern Nationals Series victory, the defending series champion from Evans, Ga., completed a sweep of Swainsboro Raceway’s doubleheader weekend Saturday night with a $5,300 win at the Paul and Debra Purvis-owned track.
Saturday’s race, which marked round five of the 10-race miniseries, was originally scheduled for Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga. But with Screven raining out, Swainsboro added a second $5,300-to-win event.
Overton previously claimed another $5,300 victory at the 3/8-mile facility on Friday, one night after taking first-place honors Toccoa (Ga.) Speedway on Thursday.
The successful stretch over has vaulted Overton into the thick of the series points standings. He currently sits third in the championship chase after five completed races on the two-week miniseries. He’s a mere 26 points behind Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., and six points behind current second place Casey Roberts of Toccoa, Ga.
Overton led every lap of Saturday’s feature and held off challenges from fellow front-row starter Ross Bailes of Clover S.C. Overton threaded his Billy Franklin-owned Rocket Chassis through lapped traffic in keeping his chief challenger behind him on a track surface that narrowed down in the latter stages.
Bailes settled for second with McDowell third. Aaron Ridley and John Henderson rounded out the top five.
The Southern Nationals Series is back in action on Sunday with a $5,300-to-win event at Rome (Ga.) Speedway.
